Gutter Guards in Altoona
Tired of the ladder every spring and fall? We install gutter guards and leaf protection in Altoona, from micro-mesh to LeafFX and Gutter Topper, and we fix the gutters underneath first if they need it.
Gutter guards for Altoona homes
Maple helicopters in spring, cottonwood fluff in early summer, a wall of leaves in October. Each round fills the gutters again, and full gutters spill water down the siding and against the foundation. A well-fitted guard keeps most of that out while rain still gets in. For Altoona homeowners who are done with the ladder, that is the whole point.
We install micro-mesh gutter guards plus LeafFX and Gutter Topper leaf protection. Micro-mesh stops small stuff like maple seeds and cottonwood fluff, and a solid cover like Gutter Topper lets leaves slide off the front edge. Before any guard goes on, we check that the gutter is sound, pitched right and hung tight, because a guard on a sagging gutter just hides the problem. See gutter guard installation.
Altoona is next door to our shop in Mitchellville, on the same east side of Polk County, about as close to home as it gets. Luke will come out, look at your trees, roof pitch and gutters, and show you guard options side by side so you can see the difference. Our Altoona service area page covers everything else we do in town. Call or text (515) 901-3646.

Why Altoona gutters fill up
Fourmile Creek and the trail
The Gay Lea Wilson Trail runs through Altoona on its way between Ankeny, Berwick and Pleasant Hill, and part of it follows Fourmile Creek. Eastern cottonwood is common along Iowa streams and drops its cottony seed from May through August. That fluff mats on top of big-hole screens and plugs them. Fine micro-mesh is the better fit near a creek, though it still needs an occasional rinse.
A fast-growing city on high ground
Altoona grew 34.6 percent between the 2010 and 2020 Census counts, to 19,565 people. Its name comes from the Latin altus, meaning high, because it was the highest point on the Des Moines Valley Railroad. Trees planted with a new house do not stay small, and the seed and leaf load grows with them. When we add guards to younger gutters, we make sure they fit the gutter size and roof edge you have.
Guards and Altoona winters
Altoona is home to Adventureland and Prairie Meadows, but for homeowners here the bigger winter question is ice. Guards help with leaves, not ice dams. Dams form when heat from the house melts roof snow that refreezes at the cold eave, and no guard stops that. What a well-supported metal guard can do is hold its shape under wet snow, while plastic and foam inserts tend to sag or stay soggy, so we steer people toward metal.

What kind of gutter guard works for cottonwood in Altoona?
Fine micro-mesh. Cottonwood fluff and small maple seeds slip through or mat on top of big-hole screens. A tight metal mesh keeps them out while water passes through. Expect to brush or rinse the top now and then during the heaviest fluff weeks, which in Iowa run from late spring into summer.
Do gutter guards stop ice dams on Altoona homes?
No. Ice dams come from heat escaping through the roof and melting snow that refreezes at the eave. Attic insulation and ventilation address that, and we do not install either. Guards keep leaves out. Our ice dams and gutters guide explains what does help.
Can you put gutter guards on my existing gutters in Altoona?
Usually. If your gutters are sound, pitched right and hung tight, we clean them out and fit guards on top. If they sag, leak or are too small, it makes more sense to fix or replace them first, and Luke will tell you which before you decide anything.
How much do gutter guards cost in Altoona?
It depends on the guard type, how many feet of gutter you have, the roof pitch and whether the gutters need work first. We do not publish prices because every house is different. Luke measures and gives you a free written estimate. Our gutter guard cost guide shows published market ranges.
