Gutter Repair or Replacement? How to Decide

By Luke at Flow Right Construction, Mitchellville, Iowa. Updated October 26, 2026.

Repair when the problem is local: a loose hanger, a leaky corner, a bent downspout or one sagging section on otherwise sound gutters. Replace when Angi's rules of thumb kick in: the repair would cost more than about half of new gutters, or the system is past about 20 years old.

The two rules of thumb

Angi's 2026 repair guide gives two simple tests. First, if a repair costs more than about 50% of a replacement, it often makes more sense to replace the gutters entirely. Second, if the gutters are past their normal life of around 20 years, replacement usually wins. Angi's aluminum gutter guide says the same about age: once gutters pass 20 years, replacing them is often more cost-effective than paying for repair after repair. Neither rule is a law, but together they settle most calls.

What a repair typically costs

Angi's 2026 data puts the national average gutter repair at $390, with most homeowners paying $240 to $480. By problem, it lists sagging gutters at $80 to $600, wrong slope at $80 to $250, leaking gutters at $80 to $140, clogged or blocked gutters at $160 to $400, and physical damage at $240 to $550. These are national market ranges, not our prices. Your actual price comes from a free estimate, and we will tell you if a repair is all you need.

When repair is the right call

Repair makes sense when the gutters are fairly young, the fascia behind them is solid, and the trouble is in one spot. A gutter pulled loose by a falling branch, a corner miter that drips, an end cap that popped, a downspout crushed by a mower, or one run with the pitch off are all good repair jobs. We rehang runs on hidden hangers, reseal miters and outlets, and replace bent elbows and downspout sections. Our gutter repair page lists what we fix.

When replacement is the smarter spend

Replace when problems are everywhere at once: sags on several runs, seams leaking along sectional gutters, rust or cracks, or gutters too small for the roof that overflow in every storm. Angi lists cracking, leaking, overflowing and not draining as signs it is likely time to replace. Replacement also lets you fix design problems a repair cannot, like upsizing to 6-inch, adding downspouts, or switching to seamless runs. See our signs you need new gutters guide for the full list.

The seamless gutter catch

Seamless gutters have far fewer joints, but a badly damaged seamless run usually cannot be fixed by swapping one piece. Angi says that because seamless gutters have no sections, you typically replace the whole run, at about $1,150 on average when damage occurs. That is one run, not the whole house. If a tree limb crushed the gutter over your garage, expect us to replace that run end to end and leave the rest. Your actual price comes from a free estimate.

Color matching on older gutters

Patching an older system has a hidden cost: matching it. Angi says finishing work like color-matching gutters to your siding or roof can add 30% or more to a repair. Old gutters also fade, so a new piece in the same factory color may still stand out. When a repair would leave one bright run on a house of chalky gutters, some owners decide to replace that whole side or the whole house at once. We will show you both options and let you choose.

Check the fascia before you decide

Angi says clogged gutters are the main cause of fascia damage and that fascia boards provide the support for gutters. If the fascia is soft, no repair will hold for long, and new gutters would be screwed into rotten wood. Angi puts fascia replacement at $7 to $23 per linear foot, labor included. Your actual price comes from a free estimate. We check the fascia and drip edge on every gutter visit, and we handle soffit and fascia work too, so the fix is done in one trip.

Timing in Central Iowa

The average first fall freeze in Polk County is about October 10, with a range from late September to late October, per Iowa State Extension. Gutters that leak or sag going into winter only get worse once snow and ice load them up. Late summer and early fall are a smart time to fix or replace. If damage shows up in spring after a hard winter, get it looked at before summer storms put the system to the test.

Common Questions

Is it worth repairing gutters that are 20 years old?

Usually not, unless the problem is small and the rest of the system is sound. Angi says gutters past about 20 years old are often more cost-effective to replace than to keep repairing, and that a repair costing more than half of a replacement points the same way.

Can you replace the gutters on just one side of a house?

Yes. Replacing a single run or one side is common after storm or tree damage. The catch is matching color and profile on older gutters. Angi says color-matching can add 30% or more to a repair, and faded gutters may not match new stock. Your actual price comes from a free estimate.

How much does it cost to fix a leaking gutter corner?

Angi's 2026 data lists leaking gutter repairs at $80 to $140 nationally, and the average gutter repair at $390. A corner leak is usually a reseal or a new miter. Your actual price comes from a free estimate after we see the corner and the fascia behind it.
