Gutters, Siding & Windows in Polk County

Polk County is home ground for Flow Right Construction. Our shop in Mitchellville is on the county's east side, and our crew works all over it, from Des Moines and Ankeny to Altoona, Bondurant and Pleasant Hill. Polk is the most populous county in Iowa, with 492,401 people at the 2020 Census. That is a lot of rooflines shedding a lot of water. We hang 5-inch and 6-inch seamless gutters, fit leaf guards, replace siding, soffit and fascia, and put in windows and doors.

Luke runs the estimates. He walks the house, measures each run, checks the fascia board and looks at where every downspout dumps its water. Then he tells you plainly what he would do and what it fixes. You get a free estimate and no pressure. Call or text (515) 901-3646 and ask for Luke, or read how we build a gutter system on our seamless gutter installation page first.

Hail and wind along the Des Moines River

The Des Moines River cuts right through the middle of Polk County, and the storms that follow it are hard on houses. NOAA storm records compiled by a local roofing company count 171 hail reports in Polk County from 2015 to 2025, the most of any Iowa county. On August 10, 2020, the derecho pushed winds up to 60 mph through central Iowa and cut power to more than 132,000 MidAmerican customers in the metro. After a storm we can look over dented gutters and cracked siding and give you a written estimate you can use. Our hail damage guide shows what to look for.

Built for zone 5A winters and wet springs

Polk County sits in building climate zone 5A and in the ENERGY STAR Northern zone for windows. In plain terms, it gets cold, and it gets wet. The Des Moines airport averages 36.55 inches of rain and melted snow a year, with May and June each topping 5 inches, plus about 36.5 inches of snow. That mix means gutters sized for downpours, downspouts that carry water well away from the foundation, and windows with a low U-factor. Our window replacement page explains the Northern zone numbers.

Every Polk County city keeps its own rules

Polk County holds about twenty cities, and each one runs its own building office. Des Moines works through its Permit and Development Center. Ankeny, Altoona, Pleasant Hill, Bondurant and the rest set their own rules for windows, decks, egress wells and storm repairs. Luke will tell you what he knows from working around the county, but the city has the final word. Before window, deck or framing work starts, call your city's building office or check its website so there are no surprises on install day.

Questions

Polk County Questions

More answers on our FAQ page and in the guides.

Who installs seamless gutters in Polk County, Iowa?

Flow Right Construction does, and we are based right in Polk County at our shop in Mitchellville. We form 5-inch and 6-inch K-style gutters to fit your roof, hang them on hidden hangers and set the downspouts where the water can get away from the house. Call or text (515) 901-3646 for a free estimate.

How much hail does Polk County get?

A lot. NOAA storm records compiled by a local roofing company list 171 hail reports in Polk County from 2015 to 2025, more than any other Iowa county, and the largest stone was 3.25 inches on July 9, 2021. Part of that count comes from Polk having the most people and storm spotters, but hail is a real risk for gutters and siding here.

Do Polk County suburbs need permits for window replacement?

It depends on the city and the job. Des Moines exempts some like-for-like window swaps when the rough opening stays the same size and safety glass is not required, while Ankeny lists egress windows among work that needs a permit. Each Polk County city sets its own rules, so check with your city's building office before work starts.

What climate zone is Polk County, Iowa for windows?

Polk County is in the ENERGY STAR Northern zone and building climate zone 5A. ENERGY STAR's Northern windows need a U-factor of 0.22 or lower with a solar heat gain of at least 0.17, or one of the equal trade-offs. Luke can walk you through the labels on the windows we install, including Alside and Marvin.
