Window Replacement in Des Moines, IA

Windows that hold up to a Des Moines January

Sit next to an old window on a Des Moines January night and you can feel the cold rolling off the glass. The U.S. Department of Energy says windows can account for 30 to 40 percent of a home's winter heat loss. Fog between the panes is a different problem: the seal has failed, and no amount of cleaning will clear it. A sash that sticks, will not lock or lets in snow dust belongs on the same list.

Flow Right installs Marvin and Alside replacement windows in Des Moines homes. Luke measures each opening, checks the frame and sill for rot and explains whether an insert or a full-frame replacement fits your house. Our crew sets each unit level and square, seals the gap around the frame, flashes the opening against water and finishes the trim inside and out. Read more on our window installation and replacement page.

One thing we will not promise is a tax credit. The federal 25C credit ended for windows placed in service after December 31, 2025, so 2026 installs do not qualify. Our 2026 window tax credit guide explains what changed. New windows still pay off in warmer rooms, less noise, fewer drafts and glass you can see through again.

Choosing windows for Polk County weather

The numbers to look for in the Northern zone

Polk County sits in the ENERGY STAR Northern climate zone and building climate zone 5A. For a window to earn the ENERGY STAR label here, the main path is a U-factor of 0.22 or lower with a solar heat gain coefficient of at least 0.17. Look for those numbers on the NFRC sticker. Many makers say triple-pane glass is the simplest way to reach them. Our double vs triple pane guide covers the tradeoffs.

Permits and egress windows in Des Moines

Under the city's 2023 Minor Repair Permit Exemption Policy, a window replacement is exempt only when every listed condition is met, including that the rough opening does not change and the window does not need safety glazing. Making an opening bigger, or cutting a basement egress window for a bedroom, falls under different rules, and Des Moines has a separate egress window policy. Check with the Des Moines Permit and Development Center for your address before ordering.

Picking a style for each room

Different rooms in a Des Moines house want different windows. A casement over the kitchen sink opens with a crank, so you do not have to lean over the counter. Double-hung windows tilt in for cleaning on a second floor. Sliders suit wide, short openings, and a bay or garden window adds a shelf of light. In the Sherman Hill, Owl's Head and River Bend historic districts, window changes go through city historic review first, so plan for that time.

What U-factor should replacement windows have in Des Moines?

Des Moines is in the ENERGY STAR Northern zone, where the main target is a U-factor of 0.22 or lower with a solar heat gain coefficient of 0.17 or higher. Lower U-factor means less heat escaping. You will find both numbers on the NFRC label of every rated window, and Luke can show you the labels on the options he quotes.

Is there a tax credit for replacing windows in Des Moines in 2026?

No federal credit applies to 2026 installs. The IRS says the 25C energy credit is not allowed for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. When we checked in October 2026, MidAmerican Energy's rebate page did not list windows either. Check with a tax professional about anything installed in 2025.

Do I need a city permit to replace windows in Des Moines?

Maybe. The city exempts window replacement only when every condition in its 2023 policy is met, including keeping the same rough opening and not needing safety glazing. Larger openings and basement egress windows follow other rules. Call the Des Moines Permit and Development Center for your address, and see our egress window page for basement projects.

How much does window replacement cost in Des Moines?

It depends on the number of windows, their size and style, frame material, glass package and whether the job is an insert or a full-frame replacement. Every house gets its own quote. Our Des Moines window cost guide shows published ranges, and Luke gives you an exact quote in a free in-home estimate.
