Soffit and Fascia Repair and Replacement
Soft fascia boards, peeling trim and sagging or missing soffit panels are more than a looks problem. They hold your gutters, vent your attic and keep birds and squirrels out. We rebuild the roof edge so it all works together.
Soffit & Fascia, Start to Finish
Most fascia trouble starts with a gutter. When a gutter clogs or pitches the wrong way, water spills behind it and soaks the board it hangs on. Angi names clogged gutters as the main cause of fascia damage. Over a few Iowa winters the wood goes soft, the paint peels and the hangers stop holding. Then the gutter sags, which spills more water behind it, and the problem feeds itself until a whole run pulls loose.
Soffit is the underside of the roof overhang. Vented soffit lets air into the attic, which helps keep the roof deck cold in winter. University of Minnesota Extension ties ice dams to heat escaping into the attic, so blocked or missing soffit vents are worth fixing. Gaps in old soffit also let in bats, birds, wasps and squirrels. We install aluminum and vinyl soffit, vented or solid, in colors that go with your trim.
Because we do gutters and siding too, you are not stuck lining up three trades. We can pull a gutter, replace the rotted fascia board, wrap it, fix the soffit and hang new seamless gutters as one project for homes across Des Moines and Central Iowa. Start on our siding installation and repair page, or read signs you need new gutters if your gutters are part of the problem.

What our soffit and fascia work covers

- Aluminum fascia wrap in matching colors
- Vented or solid aluminum and vinyl soffit
- Drip edge checked so water reaches the gutter
- Gaps closed off to birds and critters
- Gutters rehung tight on solid wood
How to tell your fascia is going bad
Walk around the house on a dry day and look up. Peeling paint along the roof edge, dark streaks behind the gutter and gutters that tip forward are all clues. Push on the board with a broom handle. Sound wood feels hard. Rotted wood feels soft or spongy, or gives a dull thud when tapped, as This Old House describes it. Also look at the corners where two boards meet. Those joints are where water and animals get in first, and where rot usually starts.
Wrap, replace or both
If the board is solid, we can wrap it in aluminum coil bent to fit, which ends the cycle of scraping and painting. If it is soft, wrapping only hides the rot while it spreads, so we cut out the bad sections and put in new lumber first. Then the wrap goes on. LP SmartSide also makes trim, fascia and soffit if you want a painted wood look that matches LP siding. Luke will show you which boards are sound and which are not before you decide anything.
Soffit and your attic
Soffit vents are the intake half of most attic ventilation. Air comes in low at the eaves and leaves high at the ridge or roof vents. When soffit is solid, painted shut or blocked from behind, that airflow stops. A cold, well vented roof is one part of how University of Minnesota Extension says to fight ice dams, along with air sealing and insulation. We handle the soffit side of that. For insulation and air sealing in the attic, talk with an insulation contractor.

Should fascia be replaced when I get new gutters?
If it is soft, rotted or will not hold a screw, yes. New gutters hang on the fascia, and Angi notes the fascia is what supports them. New gutters on bad wood will sag again. We check every board once the old gutters come down.
Is aluminum or vinyl soffit better for an Iowa house?
Both work well and neither needs paint. Aluminum stays stiffer across wide overhangs and comes in many colors. Vinyl will not dent and is easy to replace one panel at a time. Vented versions of either let the attic breathe. Luke will bring samples so you can match your trim.
What does aluminum fascia wrap actually do?
Fascia wrap is aluminum coil bent to cover the wood fascia board. It ends scraping and painting and sheds water. It only works over sound wood, though. Wrapping over rot hides the damage while it spreads, so we replace soft boards before we wrap.
Can squirrels or bats get in through soffit gaps?
Yes. Loose panels, cracked corners and gaps where the soffit meets the wall are common ways in for squirrels, bats, birds and wasps. Replacing or refastening the soffit closes those gaps. If animals are already inside, have them removed first, then we close up the roof edge.
Do soffit vents help prevent ice dams in Iowa?
They are one part of the fix. University of Minnesota Extension says ice dams start with heat escaping into the attic, so air sealing and insulation come first, with ventilation helping keep the roof cold. Open, working soffit vents supply the intake air for that ventilation.
