Gutter Repair

Gutter Repair, Start to Finish

Gutter problems rarely show up on a sunny day. You notice them in a storm: water pouring over one corner, a steady drip at a seam, a downspout that pulled off the wall. After an Iowa winter, it is often a run that sags in the middle where ice sat for weeks. Left alone, those small failures soak the fascia board, stain the siding, wash out mulch beds and send water toward the basement wall.

Gutter repair means fixing the part that failed and leaving the rest alone. That can be resealing a leaking miter or end cap, rehanging a sagging section on new hidden hangers, resetting the pitch so water runs to the outlet, replacing a dented or torn piece, or reattaching and resizing a downspout. When the fascia board behind the gutter has rotted, we replace that wood too, because a hanger cannot hold in soft board.

Luke looks at the whole system before quoting, not just the spot you called about. If your gutters are sound with one bad corner, you get a repair. If they are thin, old and leaking everywhere, he will say so and point you toward gutter replacement instead. Our guide on gutter repair or replacement lays out how to decide for yourself.

Sagging gutters and pulled-off hangers

Sagging is the most common gutter problem homeowners report, about 26 percent of issues in Angi's data. The usual causes are old spikes working out of the wood, too few hangers, a gutter full of wet debris, or ice that sat in the trough all winter. We pull the old fasteners, check the fascia and rehang the run on hidden hangers screwed into solid wood. Then we reset the pitch so the gutter drains instead of holding a puddle that will freeze again next winter.

Leaks at corners, seams and outlets

Seams and corners are where gutters leak, because that is where two pieces meet. Sealant dries out and cracks after years of sun and freeze and thaw. A proper fix is not another bead of caulk smeared over the old caulk. We clean the joint down to bare metal, reseal it with gutter sealant, and rivet or replace the corner piece if it has pulled apart. Outlets that leak around the downspout get the same treatment. On old sectional gutters with a joint every few feet, the honest answer may be seamless runs.

Hail, wind and ice damage

Iowa storms are hard on gutters. Hail dents the front lip and crushes downspouts, high wind pulls runs loose, and heavy ice can bend a gutter right off its hangers. June is the busiest hail month in Iowa's storm records. After a storm, we can look at the damage and give you a written estimate you can use. Iowa law does not let a contractor negotiate your insurance claim for you, so you stay in charge of that part. Our ice dams and gutters guide covers winter damage.

Fascia, drip edge and the wood behind the gutter

When a gutter overflows for years, water runs down the back of it and into the fascia board. Angi names clogged gutters as the main cause of fascia damage. Soft, dark or crumbling wood will not hold a hanger, so we cut it out and replace it before the gutter goes back up. We also check the drip edge along the roof, which helps send water into the gutter instead of behind it. Fixing the wood is often what turns a repeat repair into one that lasts.

Why is my gutter leaking at the corner?

Corners are joints, and the sealant inside them dries, shrinks and cracks over time, especially with Iowa freeze and thaw. A corner can also pull apart if the gutter is sagging or the hangers have loosened. We clean the joint, reseal it and add rivets or a new corner piece if needed, then check that the run is pitched so water is not sitting there.

Can a sagging gutter be fixed or does it need replacing?

Most sagging gutters can be fixed. If the gutter itself is in good shape, we rehang it on hidden hangers screwed into solid fascia and reset the pitch. If the fascia is rotted, we replace that wood first. Replacement makes more sense when sagging comes with leaking seams, rust or bent metal along much of the run.

Will you look at hail damage on my gutters and write an estimate?

Yes. We can look at dents, crushed downspouts and loose runs after a storm and give you a written estimate you can use. Under Iowa law a contractor cannot negotiate your insurance claim, so you work with your insurer directly. Our job is to tell you what is damaged and what it takes to fix it.

Do you fix rotted fascia boards behind gutters?

Yes. Rotted fascia is one of the most common things we find behind a leaking or overflowing gutter. We cut out the soft wood, replace it with sound board and rehang the gutter on hidden hangers. If the soffit or trim nearby has water damage too, we will point it out so you can decide how far to take the repair.
