Gutters, Siding & Windows in West Des Moines

Valley Junction was this city's name when it was founded on October 9, 1893, and it became West Des Moines on January 1, 1938. The old business district still goes by Historic Valley Junction. The Raccoon River and Walnut Creek have often run over their banks here, and parts of the valley flood. Gutters cannot stop a river, but they decide where your roof water lands. Good runs and downspouts keep that water off the foundation and out of the basement window wells.

We work in West Des Moines all the time. Most of the city is in Polk County, with parts in Dallas and small pieces in Warren and Madison. Luke will come out, measure, and walk you through gutter size, guards and colors. For gutter work in particular, see our page on gutter installation and cleaning in West Des Moines. Call or text (515) 901-3646 for a free estimate.

One city, four counties

West Des Moines stretches into four counties, so it pays to know your rules. Before any window work that changes the size of an opening, call the City of West Des Moines and ask about permits. Rules vary from city to city, and we would rather you hear it straight from the people who enforce them. Luke can tell you what the job involves, so you know what to ask.

Gutters sized for a big roof

National Weather Service normals put Des Moines at about 36.5 inches of precipitation a year, and much of it comes in heavy spring and summer storms. A large roof face can send more water into one corner than a 5-inch gutter can carry. In West Des Moines we often suggest 6-inch seamless gutters, extra downspouts on long runs, and outlets placed so the water clears your landscaping instead of washing out the mulch.

Windows, doors and siding

Polk County falls in the ENERGY STAR Northern climate zone, so ask about U-factor when you shop for windows; lower numbers mean less heat slips out. We install Marvin and Alside windows, plus entry, patio and storm doors. The federal 25C tax credit ended for installs after December 31, 2025, so we will not promise one. Questions

West Des Moines Questions

More answers on our FAQ page and in the guides.

Do you clean gutters in West Des Moines?

Yes. We clean out gutters and downspouts, flush them to make sure water runs to the outlets, and look over the hangers, seams and end caps while we are up there. If something needs repair, Luke will tell you plainly and give you a free estimate. Call or text (515) 901-3646 to set up a visit.

Do I need a permit for new windows in West Des Moines?

It depends on the job, and West Des Moines sets its own rules. In the City of Des Moines, some window swaps are exempt when the rough opening size does not change, but that policy does not cover West Des Moines. Call the city before work starts. Egress windows and changed openings are the cases to ask about first.

Can gutters help a West Des Moines house near Walnut Creek stay drier?

Gutters and downspouts handle the water from your roof, which is a big share of what soaks the soil right next to the foundation. They cannot keep out floodwater from the creek. What they can do is carry roof water away, often through underground tile to a pop-up emitter, so the ground around your basement walls stays drier.
