After hail, check your gutters, downspouts and the storm-facing walls first: dented aluminum, cracked or holed vinyl and chipped paint on wood or LP boards are the common signs. Then document everything, call your insurer and get written estimates from registered contractors, because Iowa law bars contractors from negotiating your claim or promising to rebate any part of a deductible.
How often hail hits central Iowa
Hail is routine here. NOAA Storm Prediction Center data compiled by MapScaping counts 15,266 Iowa hail events from 1955 through 2024, with June the busiest month at 3,800, then May at 3,625 and April at 2,609. StormerSite, which compiles spotter and media reports, lists 20 reports of hail 1 inch or larger within 10 miles of Des Moines in 2026, including 2.25 inch hail in Ankeny and 1.75 inch hail in Bondurant on September 8. The National Weather Service calls hail severe at 1 inch, about quarter size, and 1.75 inches is golf ball size.
What hail does to gutters and downspouts
Gutters are often the easiest place to see a storm's force. Look from the ground for dents along the front lip of the gutter, dimpled end caps, crushed downspout elbows and bent hangers. Shredded leaves and shingle grit from the storm can also clog outlets. A State Farm agent quoted by KCRG in April 2026 told homeowners to check gutters and other soft metals first, and said that if they are undamaged, the roof is probably undamaged as well. Dents that change the pitch or open a seam need gutter repair or new seamless runs.
What hail does to siding, soffit and trim
Damage is usually heaviest on the walls that faced the storm. On vinyl, look for cracks, punched holes and broken corners. Angi notes vinyl can become brittle in extreme cold, so late-season storms can do more harm. On LP SmartSide, fiber cement or wood, look for chipped paint, dented faces and split edges. Check window wraps, vented soffit, fascia board and the aluminum trim around doors too. LP says testing it commissioned found its cedar texture lap resists hail better than fiber cement and vinyl.
First steps after the storm
The Iowa Insurance Division lists these steps. When it is safe, inspect the roof, siding, windows and outdoor structures, and look inside for leaks. Prevent more damage by covering broken windows and openings, and keep receipts for tarps and supplies, since they may be reimbursed. Take photos and video of every damaged area. Read your policy for hail deductibles and the deadline to file. A State Farm agent quoted by KCRG said you likely have a percentage deductible, and used the example of a 2 percent deductible on a $500,000 home, which means the owner pays the first $10,000.
Working with the adjuster
The Iowa Insurance Division advises being present when the adjuster inspects and pointing out every damaged area. It suggests getting estimates from at least two registered contractors and comparing the insurer's settlement with those estimates. It also states that only the policyholder, an attorney or a public adjuster holding an Iowa license can negotiate a claim on your behalf. If the settlement leaves out damage your contractor found, raise it with your insurer or agent directly. You can look up a contractor's registration through the state's contractor search, which our contractor guide explains.
What Iowa law says about storm contractors
Iowa Code 103A.71 covers contractors who repair roofs or exteriors after a storm. A contractor may not advertise or promise to rebate any part of an insurance deductible, and may not represent or negotiate your insurance claim. The contractor must give you a written notice in at least 10-point bold type, which you sign before or with the contract, and a contract that breaks these rules is void. The Iowa Attorney General's office says that in most situations you have three business days to cancel a home repair contract after signing, and takes storm-chaser reports at 888-777-4590.
How Flow Right helps after hail
We can come out, look at your gutters, downspouts, siding, soffit and fascia, take photos and give you a written estimate you can use when you talk with your insurer. We do not negotiate claims, and we do not touch deductibles; Iowa law is clear on both, and we follow it. If repairs make sense, we can replace dented runs with new seamless gutters, swap cracked vinyl panels or re-side storm-facing walls. See our siding installation and repair page for how we work.
Common Questions
Does homeowners insurance cover hail damage to siding in Iowa?
Often, but it depends on your policy. The Iowa Insurance Division says to check for hail-specific deductibles or exclusions and the deadline to file, document the damage with photos and video, and be present when the adjuster inspects.
Can a contractor offer to cover my insurance deductible in Iowa?
No. Iowa Code 103A.71 bars storm-repair contractors from advertising or promising to rebate any part of a deductible, and from negotiating your claim. A contract that breaks those rules is void. Report offers like that to the Iowa Attorney General.
How can I tell if hail dented my gutters?
Look from the ground at the front lip of the gutters, the end caps and the downspout elbows for dents and dimples. Check after the storm in low sun, when dents cast shadows. If you see damage, we can inspect and give you a written estimate.
