Copper and Half-Round Gutters for Central Iowa Homes

Half-round and solid copper gutters give a house a finished, classic edge. We size them for Central Iowa downpours, hang them straight and pair them with round downspouts, so the look holds up and the water still goes where it should.

Copper & Half-Round

Copper & Half-Round, Start to Finish

Most houses around Des Moines wear plain K-style gutters, and that works fine. But some homes call for something different. A brick front with a curved porch, a stone entry, a cottage roofline or a custom build can look unfinished with a boxy gutter on the edge. Half-round gutters have a soft, rounded profile that sits clean under the roof line. Solid copper takes that a step further, starting bright like a new penny and slowly darkening as it weathers.

The catch is capacity. A half-round gutter holds less water than a K-style of the same width. This Old House rates a 5-inch half-round for about 2,500 square feet of roof, compared with about 5,520 for a 5-inch K-style. Des Moines gets about 36.5 inches of precipitation in a normal year, per the National Weather Service, and much of it comes in hard bursts. So we size half-round with care and look at going up a size or adding a downspout.

Luke comes out, measures each roof section, checks the pitch and looks at where water can leave the yard. Then he walks you through copper or another finish, 5-inch or 6-inch, and how many 4-inch round downspouts the house needs. If you like a rain chain at the front step, we install those too. It is the same careful process as our seamless gutter installation, with a different profile.

What you get

What a copper or half-round job includes

  • Half-round gutters sized to each roof section
  • Solid copper gutters for a lasting, aging finish
  • 4-inch round downspouts to match the profile
  • Hangers spaced for snow and ice weight
  • Rain chains where a downspout would look out of place
  • Clean job site and a final walkthrough

Copper: what to expect as it ages

New copper is bright and shiny for only a short time. HomeAdvisor describes the change as going from penny color to brown, then charcoal, and finally to a green patina over about 20 years in many climates. Angi puts copper gutters at 50 years or more of service, compared with up to about 25 for aluminum. Copper does not need paint, and it will not fade like a painted finish. The tradeoff is cost and care around other metals. Copper and aluminum should not touch, so flashing, fasteners and downspout parts need to match. Our guide to aluminum vs. copper vs. steel gutters compares them side by side.

Half-round on an Iowa roof

Half-round looks light, but Iowa asks a lot of a gutter. Wet snow piles on the edge in winter, and spring and summer storms can dump water faster than a small gutter can move it. That is why sizing matters more here than the profile. On big or steep roof sections we may suggest 6-inch half-round, extra outlets, or a K-style run on the back of the house where no one sees it. You keep the classic look on the front and still get the water off the roof and away from the house.

Rain chains, downspouts and the ground below

A rain chain is pretty, but it does not move water like a closed downspout. In a heavy Iowa storm some water splashes off the links. We place chains where that splash will not hurt anything, like over a stone basin or a bed of rock, and we keep closed 4-inch round downspouts on corners that drain toward the foundation. University of Minnesota Extension says downspouts should empty at least 4 feet from the wall. We can pipe them farther with underground tile when the yard allows, as we do on gutter jobs in Des Moines and nearby towns.

Are copper gutters worth it on a house in Central Iowa?

They can be if you plan to stay and want a finish that never needs paint. Angi lists copper at 50 years or more, about twice the life of aluminum. They cost more up front, so many owners use copper where it shows most, such as a front porch or entry. Luke can price it both ways at your free estimate.

Do half-round gutters overflow more than K-style gutters?

They can if they are undersized. A 5-inch half-round handles less than half the roof area of a 5-inch K-style, according to This Old House sizing tables. The fix is a 6-inch half-round, more downspouts or shorter runs. We measure each roof section before we recommend a size.

How long does it take copper gutters to turn green?

HomeAdvisor describes copper moving from penny color to brown, then charcoal, then a green patina over about 20 years in many climates. Sun, rain and the side of the house all change the pace. Some owners love the brown stage. Copper can be left alone through every stage with no paint or sealer.

Can I mix half-round gutters on the front and K-style on the back?

Yes. It is a practical way to get the classic look where people see it and more capacity where the roof is large. We match colors and keep the change at an outside corner so it is hard to spot from the street. Luke will show you where the switch makes sense on your house.

Do rain chains work in heavy Iowa storms?

They work, but they splash more than a closed downspout during a hard rain. Use them where splash lands on rock or in a basin, not against a basement wall. On corners that drain toward the foundation, a 4-inch round downspout carried at least 4 feet out is the safer pick.
