Gutter work in Ames

Landlords in Ames know the call. A tenant texts a photo of water pouring off the roof right over the back door, or a puddle in the basement after a storm. Usually the gutter is clogged, sagging or too small, or a downspout empties right at the foundation. We find the cause, fix it, and leave you with gutters that do their job without much attention.

For new gutters we form 5-inch or 6-inch K-style seamless gutters on site, hang them on hidden hangers and pitch each run to its outlet. For repairs we reseal leaking corners, re-hang sagging runs and replace dented sections. If you manage several places, we are glad to look at them on one trip. See seamless gutter installation and gutter repair for more.

We come out to Ames regularly from our shop in Mitchellville; call and we will tell you straight when we can be there. Ames sits along the western edge of Story County, and we work for homeowners, rental owners, churches and businesses alike. Our Ames service area page lists everything else we do. Free estimates start with a call or text to (515) 901-3646.

What is different about Ames

A university town full of renters

Iowa State University was founded in 1856 and was the first designated land-grant university in the country. It had 30,177 students in fall 2023, and Campustown is a dense neighborhood with many student apartments. If you own rentals, a gutter that overflows or a downspout that floods a basement unit becomes a repair call in a hurry. We are happy to plan gutter work around move-out and move-in dates when you tell us what they are.

Ames rental rules

Every rental dwelling in Ames must be registered with the city's Inspection Division, and rentals are inspected against the minimum maintenance standards in the Ames Rental Housing Code. We are not inspectors and cannot say what an inspection will flag. What we can do is fix leaking, loose or missing gutters and downspouts before they turn into water damage, and give you a written description of the work for your records.

Creeks, trees and drainage

The South Skunk River and Ioway Creek both pass through Ames. Eastern cottonwood is common along Iowa streams and drops its cottony seed from May through August, and silver maples, the most common native maple in the state, shed seeds too. All of it ends up in gutters. On a low lot the downspouts matter as much as the gutters, so we add extensions, splash blocks or underground tile to move water off.

Do you do gutter work on rental properties in Ames?

Plenty of it. We work for rental owners and property managers as well as homeowners. We can look at more than one property on a trip, give you a written estimate for each and plan the work around tenant dates. Luke does the estimates in person, so you get one person to talk to from start to finish.

Will new gutters help my Ames rental pass inspection?

We cannot speak for the city's inspectors. The Ames Rental Housing Code sets minimum maintenance standards, and the Inspection Division decides what passes. If an inspection notes gutter or downspout problems, send us the list and we will quote the repairs so you can get them handled.

Will Flow Right travel to Ames for a gutter job?

Absolutely. We come out to Ames regularly from our shop in Mitchellville. Call or text (515) 901-3646, tell us the address and what you need, and we will tell you straight when we can get there. Estimates are free, and Luke handles them on site.

Why does my Ames basement get wet when it rains hard?

Often the roof is the cause. A downspout that empties at the foundation can put a lot of water against the wall in a single storm. Extending it, adding a splash block or running it to underground tile usually helps. Our downspout drainage guide explains the options.
