Gutter Repair in Des Moines, IA

Fix the sag, the leak or the storm damage

Most repair calls start with one of three things: a run pulling away from the house, water dripping from a corner seam, or a downspout bent flat by hail or a falling limb. Sagging and loose gutters make up about 26 percent of the gutter problems homeowners report to Angi. A sag holds standing water, and in a Des Moines winter that water freezes heavy enough to pull the next hanger loose.

Our Des Moines gutter repairs are the basics done right. We drive new hidden hangers into sound fascia, reseal miters and end caps, re-pitch runs so they drain to the outlet, swap crushed downspouts and elbows, and add hinges or flip-ups where the mower keeps clipping an extension. If the fascia board behind the gutter is soft, we show you before hanging anything back on it. See our main gutter repair service page.

Luke will also tell you when repair stops making sense. Angi's rule of thumb is that once a repair runs past about half the cost of new gutters, or the system is past about 20 years old, replacing usually wins. In that case he writes up both options so you can choose. Our repair or replace guide walks through the same math.

What breaks gutters in Des Moines

Hail, wind and falling limbs

Polk County logged 171 hail events from 2015 through 2025 in NOAA storm records, more than any other Iowa county, and the largest stones measured 3.25 inches on July 9, 2021. The August 10, 2020 derecho pushed winds near 60 mph through central Iowa. Dented gutters, crushed downspouts and torn-off runs show up across Des Moines after storms like those. We can look at the damage and give you a written estimate to use with your insurance company.

Ice, snow and tired sealant

Des Moines averages about 36.5 inches of snow a season, and every thaw and refreeze works on the sealant at corners and end caps. Ice in a clogged gutter adds weight that bends hangers and spreads the seams. Polk County's median last spring freeze falls around April 22, so late April or May is a good time to walk around the house and look for new drips, gaps and sags that winter left behind.

Water landing at the foundation

A downspout that has come apart at the elbow, or one with no extension, dumps a whole roof's worth of water against the basement wall. University of Minnesota Extension calls a downspout without an extension or splash block worse than no downspout at all, and advises discharging at least 4 feet out. We reconnect loose sections, add extensions or flip-ups, and can run downspouts underground to an emitter in the lawn.

Can you repair hail-dented gutters on a Des Moines house?

Yes. Small dents in a gutter often do not affect how it drains, while crushed downspouts and bent elbows usually need replacing. We look at the damage and give you a written estimate you can share with your insurance company. Under Iowa Code 103A.71 a contractor cannot negotiate your claim, so you deal with the insurer directly. Our hail damage guide lists the steps.

Why are my gutters pulling away from the fascia in Des Moines?

Usually the hangers or spikes have backed out, the fascia board behind them has rotted, or ice and debris added more weight than they could hold. We find out which one it is. Loose hangers get replaced with hidden hangers in solid wood, and soft fascia gets replaced first so the new fasteners have something to bite into.

Should I repair or replace 20-year-old gutters in Des Moines?

At that age it is worth pricing both. If only one corner leaks and the runs are straight, a repair can buy years. If several seams drip, the gutters sag in more than one spot and the paint is chalking, new seamless gutters usually make more sense. Compare it with our Des Moines gutter replacement page.

Can a leaking gutter corner on a Des Moines home be resealed?

Most of the time, yes. We clean the old caulk and grime out of the miter, dry it, and seal it with a gutter sealant made to stay flexible through freeze and thaw. If the corner is cracked or bent, we replace the miter itself. Either way, we check the pitch too, because standing water at a corner wears out sealant fast.
